INTEGRATION OF GENDER IN PEACE: AN ANALYSIS OF THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN GENDER EQUALITY, PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT

ABSTRACT

Nigeria in its quest to end many of its conflict situations and bring about some form of peace has often neglected to put to effective use more than half of its population, the women, there by wasting valuable resources. Signatory to a lot of international agreements in support of promoting gender equality in all areas including peace and formal peace processes, Nigeria has not been able to fully translate promises to practice due to already existing gender inequalities deep in its institution, structures and culture. This work aims to shed light on the importance of incorporating gender and gender equality in peace process by studying and highlighting the effect of gender inequality on women during conflict, challenges to women participating or contributing effectively to bringing positive peace and ensuring individual and collective development and also reveal the centrality of gender equality to sustainable development. This study focuses on women in two conflict prone areas - the Niger Delta and Northern part of Nigeria.
