INVESTIGATING PEDAGOGICAL CONTENT KNOWLEDGE OF AN INTEGRATED SCIENCE TEACHER: A CASE STUDY AT BENKUM SHS..

ABSTRACT This study was designed to investigate the PCK of an integrated science teacher: which includes the kind of PCK teacher exhibits in the planning and implementation of lessons on selected topics and how it influences her belief about teaching science at the Senior High School level. The explanatory sequential mixed method design was used in this study. The research was carried out in Benkum Senior High SchoolLarteh in the Akuapem North Municipality. The sample was an integrated science teacher selected through purposive sampling. The main instruments used were interview guide, observation schedule and questionnaire. Cronbach alpha (α) values of the teachers‟ questionnaire was 0.72. The results showed that the integrated science teacher lacked consistency among the components of PCK and this negatively affected his/her ability to present concepts well. This could be the reason why SHS graduates and all graduates show scientific mediocre and perform poorly in the Integrated Science WASSCE. It was found out that, the teachers‟ inconsistency in PCK had a negative influence on her teaching of the subject. It was recommended that the government/ policy makers should give the teacher the chance to periodically upgrade her PCK to conform to modern and current demands of the classroom.
