An Assessment of the Role of EFCC in Enhancing Accountability in the Nigeria Public Sector; A Study of the Kaduna and Kano Zones (2011 - 2015)

ABSTRACT

Several years of misrule and mismanagement had weakened the economic management processes and institutions in Nigeria. Obviously there was no transparency and Accountability in Government (public sector). The sector became notorious for endemic corruption. The result was/is the inability of the government to delivered services to the Nigeria public. Widespread economic and financial crime like the advanced free fraud (419), money laundering, diversion of public fund to private uses, bank fraud and academic corruption has Crippled the economy of our dear country leading to drastic decrease in direct foreign investment in the country. Consequently, the EFCC and sister agencies were established in an attempt for preventing, investigating and prosecute corrupt practices in the public sector. This research work aimed at assessing the role of EFCC in Enhancing Accountability in Nigeria public sector. The study adopted the survey research approach using the two study area's ie the EFCC Kano and Kaduna zones, who formed the population of the study. A sample size of 76 was chosen using the Yamanes model while simple random techniques was used to select the sample. Data retrieved from the 76 completed questionnaire were subsequently presented in tables while simple percentage were used to analyze and answer research questions formulated to guide the research work. The Hypothesis were all tested using a Chi-square tool which revealed that the role of EFCC on anticorruption war have a positive impact on Enhancing Accountability in Nigeria public sector and that (1)lack of societal cooperation(2)financial independents(3)political interference (4)inefficient judiciary are the impediment of EFCC for effective control of corruption in public sector. The study, suggests, that concerned and enlightened individuals and general public should collaborate with EFCC to uproot corruption in public sector and Nigeria as a whole and that EFCC should be strengthened, be more effective and efficient with more powers to face the top public officials. Further, the government should adopt appropriate measures no matter how bitter, to stamped this cause of corruption if we(Nigeria) really want fight corruption. Government should ensure that the public sector officials discharge their duties in compliance with the code of conduct guiding the public sector.
