Legal Requirements For Infrastructural Development in Nigeria

There is an inherent correlation between law and pace of infrastructural development. A solid, clear and foreseeable legal construction policy regime forms the basis for infrastructural development. In any form of legal regime, the role of the government and its bureaucracy remains crucial at every stage including licensing, construction and operation of infrastructural development projects. The Corona Virus (Covid-19) pandemic has introduced new construction requirements. This research work ascertains the existing and emerging legal requirements for infrastructural development in Nigeria, resulting challenges in meeting or ignoring these construction laws. A review of related literature was carried out along with thematic analysis of qualitative data derived through questionnaires and personal interviews from the sources of data. The research findings shows that existing requirements are relevant however new construction laws need to be enacted and made more responsive to modern standards-with improved implementation and prosecution of defaulters; corruption and interest of government officials participating in project is an issue; there is need for massive awareness, sensitization, and consultation by pertinent government agencies involved in the construction industry.
