DEVISING YORÙBÁ TERMINOLOGY FOR HUMAN DISEASES

   ABSTRACT 
Recently,  there  has  been  a  spate  of  scholar’s  interest  in  studying  language across  disciplines  so  as  to  expand  languages.  Previous  studies  on  terminology development  focus  on  politics,  computing,  literature,  methodology,  language  and numerals. Medicine as another field of inquiry  serves pertinent  functions across  all human endeavours and studying this from linguistics perspective could be attempt the creation of the interface  between language and medicine. This work is triggered by the unavailability of Yorùbá terminologies for some diseases. This  study  utilizes  quiz  questions  distributed  to  medical  and  trado-medical practitioners,  local  herb  sellers,  and  butchers  to  adjudge  and  examine  their proficiencies by requesting them to provide the Yorùbá equivalents for some diseases. However, for the analysis of data, the researcher adopts the Information Processing Model (IPM) which comprises a five step feeding relationship to process names of the selected candidates and further generate the proposed Yorùbá terms. The results reveal that none of the quiz respondents provides more than three equivalents out of ten diseases listed; hence, the researcher sees the crucial need for the formulation of the Yorùbá terms. Also, some of the candidates presented for the data analysis already have Yorùbá equivalents but were not explicit enough because the  words used to describe the equivalents are  going  out of  use.  In this  regard, the Information  Processing  Model was used to  generate the  Yorùbá equivalents for  all candidate presented. This study shows that improvement in terminology creation for disease shall enlighten people about the Yorùbá equivalent of some diseases that do not  have  Yorùbá  names  and  also  expand  the  lexicons  of  the  Yorùbá  language  in medicine as one of the fields of human endeavour that is evidently indispensable.  The study therefore concludes that more Yorùbá names could be assigned to medical diseases to update the speed of advancement in the medical researches; this will,  therefore,  go  a  long  way  to  revealing  how  terminology  formulating  could  be functionally  used  to  address  social  issues  and  also  expand  the  lexicon  of  Yorùbá language.
