ABSTRACT
The study intended to establish the relationship between management of demobilization packages and socio economic reintegration of demobilized soldiers in Musanze District, Northern Province, Rwanda. The study employed a descriptive comparative, correlational, expost facto and cross sectional survey designs. A sample of 356 respondents was taken. The questionnaire was used to answer 5 research questions which included; profile of respondents; extent of management of demobilisation packages; level of socio-economic re-integration of demobilized soldiers; difference in level of socio-economic reintegration among demobilized soldiers and relationship between the extent of management of demobilization packages and level of socio-economic reintegration. Data analysis was done using frequencies and percentages, means, t-test and Pearson’s Correlations. The findings indicated that most respondents ranged between 20-39 years with (607%), males with (94.7%), with primary education level (75.6%) over (71.3%) were married, self employed (61%) and majority (67.4%) belonged to RDF. The management of demobilisation packages was found to be generally good (AVERAGE MEAN=3.20) and the level of socio-economic reintegration of the demobilized soldiers was found to be high (overall mean=3.20). There was a significant difference in the level of socio economic reintegration of demobilized soldiers between male and female respondents (t=7.385, sig.=.000) and there was a positive significant relationship between the extent of management of demobilization packages and the level of socio-economic reintegration of the demobilized soldiers (r=.957, sig. =.000). The researcher recommended that there is need to uplift the education level of the demobilised soldiers in Musanze district since most of them were found to be primary graduates. There is need to improve more on the management of demobilization packages in Musanze district, by improving on the following aspects; person screening for those to receive demobi lisation packages; proper community sensitization before giving demobilisation aid; proper planning of the packages before they are given, ensure that the demobilisation packages are used for the planned purposes through follow up programs, increase transparency and accountability in giving demobilisation packages and ensure that demobilisation packages are given in different forms (e.g. cash, medical treatment housing and payment of school fees). There is a need to improve the socio-economic reintegration of demobilized soldiers taking them through community cleansing rituals, ensure each joins at least one community association, take them for formal education course, help them establish their own businesses by giving them some business capital, RDRC should recommend them for jobs, assist them to get good houses, train them acquire skills in electronics repairs, driving and mechanics, tailoring, welding, masonry, etc.
