Abstract:

This study examines the management of disengagement and accrued benefits in the public sector of Nigeria, with specific focus on the Federal Civil Service. In doing this, certain objectives which the study aims to achieve were itemized and an assumption is made. Data were collected through from secondary sources and analysed using content analysis. Some literatures were reviewed, and both the contributory and non-contributory schools of thought on pension were used to explain the existing pension schemes in Nigeria. The study concludes that the recently introduced Contributory Pension Scheme guarantees the effective management of disengagement and accrued benefits in the Nigerian civil service and, as such, recommends that the government should put strict measures in place to ensure that the scheme isn’t abused; there’s the need for more enlightenment campaign to educate the civil servants, and the Nigerian public at large, on the benefits of the Scheme.
