ABSTRACT

Anxiety is a behavioral trait often described as apprehension about a coming event, and it is normal and appropriate to the situation. Like most biological processes, it exists as a continuum. However, when anxiety becomes excessive around normal events, causing distress and affecting quality of life, it is considered a disorder. Most of the previous studies conducted in Nigeria on mental disorders among the older adults in FCT Abuja, assessed anxiety but did not report on the prevalence and control measures. There is a dearth of information on the causes, prevalence and control of anxiety disorder among community-dwelling adults in FCT Abuja. The study seeks to ascertain the Causes Prevalence and Control of Anxiety Disorder among Adults in FCT. The research adopted a descriptive survey design, a sample size of 433 patients with anxiety disorder participated in this study and a structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentage. The study recommends that primary healthcare physicians should take time to observe AD among age between 31- 50 years and above, this age group should be encouraged to visit clinics for medical checkup on a regular basis in order to facilitate early detection and further research should be conducted on all the 11 general hospitals in FCT.
