Net Export And Economic Growth In Burundi (2003 —2012)

ABSTRACT

This thesis was based on net export and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Burundi. The

research was guided by three objectives, that is, (i) to evaluate the level of net exports in Burundi

from 2003 2012. (ii) To assess the level of economic growth in Burundi from 2003 to 2012.

(iii) to find out if there is a significant relationship between net exports and economic growth in

Burundi from 2003 -2012.The study hypothesis was that there is no relationship between net

export and GDP growth rates in Burundi (2003—2012)” Therefore time series analysis such

Correlation and regression analysis were used in analyzing data. The study set to investigate the

levels of net exports and GDP rates and finally the relationship between net exports and

economic growth rate of Burundi. The results were that the level of net exports over the period of

10 years recorded a negative result (deficits) with the trend registering ups and downs were in

some years the net export negative value was reduced. The prevalence of the negative net export

in Burundi is associated to low levels of exports and high importation mainly due to low

industrialization and the agricultural (raw material exports). The economic growth rate of

Burundi was poor with only single digit growth. Results indicate that the peak of the trend was in

2006, where the economy experienced the highest GDP rates, in 2003 1.2 deductions were

generated.
