Perceptions And Attitudes Of Communities Towards Community Policing In Tanzania: A Case Of Dodoma Municipality

ABSTRACT

The main objective of this study was to assess the perception and attitudes of

communities towards community policing in Tanzania, with particular emphasis on

Dodoma Municipality. A cross-sectional survey method was adopted in order to

collect data from various respondents especially the retired and in-service police

officers. Data collection was carried out by the use of well structured and pre-tested

questionnaires. Both primary and secondary data were collected. Qualitative and

quantitative data were gathered and analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social

Sciences (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel computer programmes in order to get

frequencies and percentages.

This study recommends that to enhance trust and support from the community in the

implementation of community policing, the Tanzania Police Force should overcome

the influences of political interference. Police officers should be neutral in

performing their duties. They should strive not only to ensure confidentiality of the

informers and the information given as required by the law but also should not

perceive community policing as a tool that displace them from their responsibilities

by ensuring security to the community as well as to establish an effective mechanism

of analysing crime information given by the community members did determine a

reality, truthfulness and an integrity of such information.
