ABSTRACT
Rapid increase in population, in conjunction with increase in the rate of urbanization, has led to unplanned and uncontrolled expansion of Minna town. These have also resulted in the gradual loss of open spaces in the city, due to quest for built up area. The aim of the research is to assess the rate and pattern of urban green space conversion in Minna metropolis, with a view to generating adequate information that would facilitate and improve urban land management. The objective of this study was to assess the rate in extent and pattern of green space changes of Minna metropolis. In this research, examination of Minna masterplan of 1979-2000 was done to check the level of adherence and the current development in the study area, landsat images of 2001 and 2009 were classified and current land use map and types were produced and compared with the provisions of the masterplan in order to determine and calculate the percentage rate of changes. The finding shows great discrepancies which about 13.57 sq km is being lost every year at the expense of urban green space. The significant decrease that occurred in extent of urban green spaces result in downgrading and destruction of the functions and services these areas provide. It is fundamentally important that open spaces within the built environment in cities be created and improved to enhance the quality of the environment as well as the life of the people. The government, private individual and non-governmental organization should be encouraged to engage in development of this important element in urban environment. The government should also encourage strict planning control in urban development.
