Phytoplankton Biomass And Diversity At The Iyagbe Lagoon Lagos, Nigeria

ABSTRACT

Fluctuations in phytoplankton biomass and diversity in relation to environmental factors at the Tyagbe lagoon, Lagos were investigated monthly from October, 2004 to September, 2006. The water quality indices reflected seasonal changes closely related to rainfall distributive patter and tidal seawater incursion. Whereas air temperature, surface water temperature, total dissolved solids, transparency, sulphate, silica, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, salinity, chloride, pH, acidity, alkalinity, total hardness, calcium and magnesium recorded increasing values in the dry season, chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, total suspended solids, nitrate, phosphates, copper, zinc and iron recorded higher values in the wet seasons. Qualitative and quantitative changes in the phytoplankton community occurred during the two year seasonal cycle in response to changes in environmental factors. There were clear differences in phytoplankton species in the fresh, brackish and marine zones especially in the dry season. The phytoplankton of the lyagbe lagoon belonged to seven main algal groups namely: Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta, Euglenophyta, Bacillariophyta, Chrysophyta, Pynthophyta and Rhodophyta. A total of 129 species belonging to 64 genera were observed. Diatoms formed the most abundant group making up 90 species from 39 genera. This was followed by the cyanobacteria with 19 species from nine genera, the green algae with 10 species from eight genera, the cuglenoids with four species from three genera, the dinoflagellates with three species from two genera, the chrysophytes with two species from two genera and the red algae represented by one species.
