Understanding the Influence of Planned Obsolescence on Consumer Society

ABSTRACT

The consumption of and divestment of consumer goods is accelerating rapidly, placing enormous pressures on both the environment and individual consumers. Behind it all is the term planned obsolescence, being used as an incentive by companies to make durable goods obsolete in a very rapid manner. Within this context, this study investigates planned obsolescence and consumer disposal behaviour that includes the various reasons for premature replacements. First section addresses the theoretical background and provide a comprehensive overview through types of planned obsolescence, characteristics and influences. In addition, I studied the consumers’ mental makeup during the purchase process, satisfaction, desired and expected lifetime of durable goods. For this purpose, I employed the research conducted by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) which aimed to explore consumers’ views, attitudes and perceptions of the lifetimes of durable products using electrical appliances as example. Following the survey results, recommendations were outlined for a more sustainable consumption of consumer electronics.
