PREPARATION OF PRE - SERVICE TEACHERS IN MUSIC AND DANCE

ABSTRACT

The study sought to identify the kind of instructional materials and methods of instruction employed in the teaching of Music and Dance in the Colleges of education gleaning on the link between the Creative Arts syllabus in Primary Schools and Music and Dance syllabus in Colleges of Education in Ghana. It was a Qualitative research that adopted Observation, and focus group Interview as the main data collection instruments. The Convenient and Purposive sampling techniques were used for the selection of seventy four (74) Elective Music and Dance student-teachers as respondents out of total of three hundred and ninety (390). The study revealed that, the course content offers very little practical and theoretical background in Music and Dance. Student-teachers are only provided with a very little learning experience in which to develop some skills. Again, there are inadequate materials/ facilities for the effective teaching and learning of Music and Dance in the Offinso College of Education. The study of Music and Dance curriculum of Colleges of Education in relation to Creative Arts syllabus for primary schools in Ghana, also showed that, the course content for both first years and the second years offer no practical skills. Lastly, it is recommended that Colleges of Education Music and Dance curriculum should have a bearing on the Creative Arts syllabuses for the Primary Schools. This will enable teachers develop a comprehensive knowledge in the Music and Dance Programme that will help develop confidence in them during the teaching and learning process.
