ABSTRACT Introduction Low back pain is an important and common public health problem. It is a common cause of disability and its impacts extend from financial costs in seeking treatment to loss of productivity for the affected individual. Not much is known about it in the developing world because the data is scanty. This study was set to determine the prevalence as well as common causes of low back pain among patients who attended the physiotherapy clinic in Kampala International University Teaching Hospital between 1st April 2018 to 30th April 2019. Objectives To establish the prevalence and the likely causes of low back pain among patients who attended physiotherapy department in KIU Teaching Hospital- Uganda. Methods A retrospective, descriptive as well as analytical approach was used. Data was collected entirely by record-review procedure and was analyzed using the SPSS computer programme. Results The prevalence of low back pain among the patients who attended between 1st April 2018 to 30th April 2019 was found to be 45.05% (382 out of 848). Age group 30-39 was the most affected group making up 24.6% (94 out of 382) of all the low back pain cases. Mechanical or nonspecific low back pain was the commonest cause of low back pain contributing 37.7% (144 out 382) of the cases followed by lumbar spondylosis, prolapsed intervertebral discs and traumatic LBP which had 28.3% (108 out of 382), 18.8%(72 out of 382) and 9.9%(38 out of 382) respectively. Arthritis of lumbar spine and fractures contributed the least with less that 6% contribution for both. Conclusions Findings indicated that the prevalence of low back pain between 1st April 2018 to 30th April 2019 was 45.05% (382 out of 848) and that mechanical low back pain was the commonest type of low back pain among the patient causing 37.7% (144 out of 382) of all cases. The most commonly affected age group was 30-39 years
