Abstract
Back ground Globally as of 2010, 285 million people were estimated to have diabetes, with type 2 diabetes making up 90% of all the cases (Shaw et al., 2009).There isan increased prevalence of type 2 diabetes in many African countriesdue to the changing lifestyles, feeding patterns and levels of physical activity among others (Diabetes studies, 2009).About 682 Ugandans die of diabetes related causes every month and 8200 die every year, out of which 5000 deaths are of women and children (Businge, 2011). Methodology The study was a descriptive retrospective study involving use of in-patient records of all type 2 diabetes patients who admitted on the medical ward of Kampala international university teaching hospital (KIU-TH) from 1stOctober 2013 to 30thSeptember 2014. In total, 55 patient files were used in the study. Results. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes in patients admitted in the medical ward of Kampala International University Teaching Hospital between October 2013 and September 2014 was 4.6%., lower than the 7.2% found in Kasese. The prevalence was highest (47.3%) in those above 57 years; females (63.6%); primary and no education at all (83.7%); Peasants (78.20%). The commonest complication of type 2 diabetes was heart diseases (38.3%). The greatest comorbidity associated with type 2 diabetes was urinary tract infections. Recommendations. The hospital administration should consider opening a diabetes clinic in form of a day dedicated to diabetes patients. Medical ward staff should be advised to do complete documentation of all patient information. Patients should be fully screened for all the complications of diabetes before being discharged.
