BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
The increase in the rate of road accidents is becoming a continuous problem for the average Ghanaian. Thus, road accidents, which are unintended incidents, keep rising due to the high frequency of ownership of vehicles. In the olden days, when there was a road accident, in majority of the cases, it was obvious that the accident involved motor cars. This cannot be said now because of the increase in the patronage of motorcycles. Subsequently, Gururaj, G. (2008) indicated that in India, there has been an increase in the use of motorcycles which is aiding in the increase in road traffic injuries (RTI). Consequently, motorcycles are now being used for commercial purposes. That is, motorcycles are used as means of transport by conveying people and their loads from one place to the other. Likewise, Tuffour, and Appiagyei (2014) mentioned that the use of motorcycles were not so common in Ghana until the year 2001. Thus, it was mainly used for courier services. Subsequently, Tuffuor, et al. (2014) discovered that the use of motorcycles as transportation penetrated the public transport market recently tending to widen the motorcycle taxi services. Therefore, they mentioned that in present day Ghana, the use of motorcycles is used as urban public transportation services. Similarly, Arogo, Ugwu, Diekedie, Ephraim, and Benson (2014) mentioned that in Nigeria, motorcycles have been used for commercial purposes since the late 1980s. However, Arogo, et al. (2014) noted that a lot of individuals who indulged in the use of motorcycles as taxis are illiterates. Consequently, they only indulge in this business because of the high unemployment in most of the countries.
