ABSTRACT
This study was set to investigate the relationship between resource availability and maternal mortality in Budaka District, Uganda from 2005 to 2011. The study basically examined secondary data. It was also a descriptive-correlation since it sought to examine the relationship between the independent variables (resource availability) and the dependent variable (maternal mortality). The population of this study was the records on the variables of the study from 2005 to 2011. The study targeted annual reports by the Budaka District health department and Ministry of Health. The study had three (3) objectives and these were; to investigate the level of resource availability in Budaka District, Uganda, to determine the level of maternal mortality in Budaka District, Uganda, and to establish whether there is a significant relationship between the level of resource availability and the level of maternal mortality in the following ways; skilled health personnel and maternal mortality; equipment and maternal mortality; essential supplies and maternal mortality from 2005 to 2011. The study found out that the level of level of resource availability in Budaka district was increasing over time, level of maternal mortality was decreasing over time, and that there was no significant relationship between skilled health personnel and maternal mortality thus; the null hypothesis was accepted basing on the findings, leading to a conclusion that there is no significant relationship between skilled health personnel and maternal mortality. The researcher had a few recommendations thus; Budaka district’s local government together with the central government should put efficient health systems in place that can design public policies, implement, audit and other checks and balances to ensure efficient use of public funds so as to maintain and promote a significant impact on maternal mortality and maternal health. And that Budaka district local government should have a data base system that captures information on health related issues, like births, child mortality, adult mortality (men and women aged 15 — 49), diseases and others. The central government especially ministry of health and Uganda bureau of statistics should have data broke down up to district level instead of having it by region and the whole country
