Response of Floating Production and Storage Vessel in an Offshore Environment

The aim of the project is to develop a numerical tool used to predict vessel motions of a turret moored

FPSO, then perform a comparative analysis between the 6 degree of motions measured on the FPSOs

during the 7 months period and the predictions from this numerical model.

The first step was to carry out statistical and extreme value analysis of the metocean data obtained

from hindcast and measured data, this gave an insight to the characteristics of the measured data and

how it closely relates to the hindcast. Next was to determine the response of the vessel based on the

basic assumption of the linearity of the vessel RAO and the assumption that the wave loading was

Gaussian. A Matlab code was written to determine the response of the vessel at each time step, a

major consideration that was included in this code was to account for the vessel heading and the

directionality of the wave at each time step. Finally results gotten were then compared to the

measured vessel motions.

In overall this study has provided a tool to describe vessel motions due to wave loading.
