ABSTRACT
This study aimed at establishing the role played by school management in handling career-related stress (HCRS) in secondary schools in Tarime District in Tanzania. The investigation was conducted through mixed research approach to meet the three objectives of the study which were to examine the extent of existing level of career related stress (CRS) among teachers based on their sex, level of education, work experience and general teachers perception, to identify the main mechanisms used in handling career-related stress among secondary schools and to evaluate effectiveness of identified mechanisms in handling career-related stress among teachers in secondary schools. The study involved 62 participants from six secondary schools who were selected through purposive and convenient sampling techniques while the schools were randomly sampled. Data were collected through questionnaire and interviews .Qualitative data were analysed thematically while quantitative data were analysed manually and through Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. The study showed that male secondary teachers, diploma holder teachers, teachers with 4-7 years of work experience have high CRS compared to other groups. The main effective mechanisms used in HCRS among teachers were guidance and counselling, sports and games participation, reading different literature and watching TV, meetings, discussions and social supports. The study recommends the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Vocational Training to develop and distribute stress management guide that will be used in secondary schools. The school management members should be trained for HCRS among teachers in secondary schools for effective empowerment of the Ministry of Education Science, Technology and Vocational training Policy.
