Social factors as determinants of attitude of University of Ibadan undergraduate students towards their counterparts with hearing impairment



















ABSTRACT

There have been different kinds of attitudes formed towards students with hearing impairment by their counterparts with normal hearing at the University of Ibadan. This has negative effects on the social and academic adjustment of students with hearing impairment and there have been few studies on this subject in the literature.  Therefore, the study sought to provide solutions to this problem.  

Many researches have been carried out on the attitude of students with normal hearing towards their counterparts with hearing impairment, but little have been done on the relationship between social factors as the determinants of the attitudes of students towards their counterparts with hearing impairment. This study therefore examined social factors as determinants of attitude of university of Ibadan undergraduate students towards their counterparts with hearing impairment.

The survey research design was adopted. The Simple random sampling technique was used to select 60 undergraduate students with normal hearing from three faculties in the University of Ibadan. One research instrument was used for data collection: a self-developed questionnaire. Two research questions were answered and three hypotheses were tested at the 0.05 level of significance. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlation and Multiple Regression.
