The Impact of Social Network Sites on Employee Productivity (A study of UAC Nigeria Plc)

ABSTRACT


This study assessed the impact of social network sites on employee productivity with special reference to UAC Nigeria Plc. The objectives of the study were to find out the influence of social networking sites on employee performance, to investigate the effect of social networking sites on employee organizational commitment and examine the effect of social networking sites on employee productivity. Bases on the objectives of the study three research questions were posed which also led to the formulation of three hypotheses. Descriptive research design was utilized in the study. The sampling technique adopted was non random sampling (convenience) with a sample size of (110). Questionnaire was the data collection instrument used in the study. the questionnaire was validated and Cronbach’s alpha reliability coefficient was 0.7.Major findings of the study revealed that, there is a positive relationship between social networking sites and employee performance. It was discovered from the findings of the study that there is a positive relationship between social networking sites and employee organizational commitment. Furthermore, the study also shows that there is a weak but positive relationship between social networking sites and employee productivity. It was concluded that social media when used in a positive manner can help employees in gaining knowledge which can be used to enhance organizational performance. It was recommended that organizations should develop a reward system to encourage employees’ willingness to use social media tools for knowledge sharing. It was also recommended that employers should implement policies and strategies to increase the benefits of uses of social networking sites among the employees.
