SOCIO-ECONOMIC BACKGROUND AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF CHILDREN IN BASIC SCHOOLS IN ASIKUMA-ODOBEN-BRAKWA DISTRICT, GHANA

ABSTRACT The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between socio-economic background and academic performance of children in basic schools in AsikumaOdoben-Brakwa District. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design. Quantitative and qualitative approaches were employed in the study. Through purposive and convenience sampling techniques 138 respondents (120 pupils, 12 parents, and 6 teachers) were sampled for the study. The researcher used questionnaire, interview schedule and documentary analysis as instruments for data collection. The data gathered were analysed using Descriptive statistics, Independent samples t-test statistical analysis, ANOVA and Pearson‟s Moment Correlation. The results of the study revealed that parents‟ level of education, parents‟ occupation and parents‟ level of involvement in children‟s academic development and school activities significantly correlated with children‟s academic performance. More so, parental involvement in children‟s academic work and school activities proved to be the highest predictor of children‟s academic performance in basic schools in the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District. Based on the outcome of the study, the researcher recommended that parents in Asikuma-OdobenBrakwa District need to make adequate provision for their children‟s educational needs, and intensify their involvement in their children‟s academic work and school activities so as to improve children‟s performance in schools.
