Socio-Economic Status And Women’s Welfare In Bwamba County: A Case Study Of Bubandi Sub County

ABSTRACT

The topic of the study was Socio-economic status and women’s welfare in Bwamba county

Bubandi sub-county Bundibugyo district; the problem was low levels of women’s welfare in

Bwamba county Bubandi sub-county Bundibugyo district; the purpose of the study was to

explore how socio-economic status affects women’s welfare in Bwamba county Bubandi sub

county Bundibugyo district; the objectives of the study were; to find out the different

occupations of women in Bwarnba county Bubandi sub-county Bundibugyo district, to assess

the level of income of women in Bwamba county Bubandi sub-county Bundibugyo district

and to establish the status of women in Bwamba county Bubandi sub-county Bundibugyo

district. The research used qualitative research paradigm which involved phenomenological

design. The study employed purposive sampling technique to come up with sample, and used

interview guides and focused group discussion in collecting data. According to the research

findings the occupations of women in Bwamba county in Bubandi sub-county Bundibugyo

district are agriculture, small scale businesses, goat keeping and poulty keeping; most women

in Bwarnba county are under the low levels of income; the status of women’s welfare are in

terms of adequate housing, adequate food and clothing, good education, Good health care and

earning ability. The conclusions of the study is that the different occupations of women in

Bwamba county are: agriculture, small scale businesses, goat keeping and poulty keeping;

most of the women in the two selected parishes of Busunga and Mulungitanua in Bubandi

sub-county Bwamba county Bundibugyo district are under the low levels of income; and that

the status of v~omen’s welfare are in terms of adequate housing, adequate food and clothings,

good education, Good health care and earning ability. The recommendations of the study are:

government should give grants to women to enable them have income and capital to invest in

businesses so as to improve their income level; government should emphasize investment in

agriculture since it is the major occupation of women in Bwamba county, Bubandi sub

count) majorly in the two selected parishes of Busunga and Mulungitanua, Bundibugyo

district; government should encourage women to form cooperative societies so as to practice

lending and borrowing. This will be accomplished through provision of training to the

women to enable them acquire such business skills; and that emphasis on girl child education

to boost the level of education of women in years to come. This will help improve their

earning ability and financial management ability during the execution of business activities.

This will improve the status of women in terms of good education and earning ability.
