Teachers Attitudes Towards Inclusive Education In The Selected Schools Of Ukuyani Division, Lugar! District Kenya

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to assess the the attitudes of teachers towards

inclusive education in Likuyani North Zone Lugali District, Kenya

The specific objectives of the study were to examine the opinions of teachers

towards inclusive education; investigate the factors that influence teachers

opinion towards inclusion; and examine the effects of teachers' attitudes on

performance of special education students

The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to the teachers in

inclusive schools who were part of the study.

The findings revealed the teachers had negative opinions towards the children

with special needs, the nature and the severity of the disabilities influences the

attitudes of the teachers, teachers who feel unprepared and fearful to work with

learners with disabilities in regular classes display frustration, anger and negative

attitude toward inclusive; and The lower expectations influenced student-teacher

interactions

The study recommended that, the government should build infrastructure that is

conducive for pupils with disabilities so that they fit in an inclusive setting. This

would also enable the teachers to become confident enough to teach

handicapped learners because there would be facilities to do so

More teachers should be trained in the areas of special needs education so that

they gain necessary knowledge and skills to handle and care for children with

disabilities
