THE EFFECTS OF CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN THE ECONOMY OF NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The over-riding aim of this research work is to examine the effects of corporate social responsibility to the Nigerian economy, a case study of Cadbury Nigeria Plc, with a view to identifying ways and measures through which the effects of corporate social responsibility can be improved and effectiveness of this company in contributing to national development.

To effectively carry out this research, data was collected in form of questionnaire from respondents who are staff of Cadbury Nigeria Plc. Fifty (50) questionnaires were administered and the same number was returned. After critical analysis of the data collected, findings revealed that the effects of corporate social responsibility in the economy of Nigeria cannot be over emphasized in national development.

However, there is a crying need for an in-depth study into the quality, extent of corporate social responsibility disclosure and identification of areas for future improvement so that transparency can be ensured, especially in developing countries like Nigeria where CSR studies are limited. However, some studies have proved that there is positive association between profitability of firms and CSR expenditures (see Olayinka & Temitope 2011; Amole, Adebiyi & Awolaja, 2012), while some studies prove negative relationship (e.g Bessong & Tapang, 2012).
