Abstract
Cash is the most valuable and liquid asset to Deposit Money Banks used to earn profit by issuing out loans facilities to customers. Misuse of cash holding by majority shareholders led to deterioration in the financial performance of the Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. This study assesses the impact of equity investor protection on the financial performance of Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. The data for the study was extracted from annual reports and accounts of six sampled Deposit Money Banks and the Factbooks of the Nigerian Stock Exchange from 2003 to 2014. Descriptive statics, Pearson correlation and multiple regressions were used as techniques for data analysis. The study finds that there is a significant positive relationship between cash holding and the financial performance of the Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. On the other hand, there is also a significant negative relationship between cash holding squared and the financial performance of the Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. On the basis of the findings, cash holding has an optimal level beyond which the financial performance of the Deposit Money Banks declines. Holding too much cash above the amount needed to meet overhead costs, customers’ withdrawals and other demand for cash at the banks would lead to decrease in the financial performance of the Deposit Money Banks in Nigeria. Thus, it is recommended that Deposit Money Banks should minimize their cash holding by increasing secured loans facilities to both worthy existing and new customers after due consideration of the determinants of customers’ credit worthiness.
