ABSTRACT The research study was conducted in Kisenyi, a suburb of Kampala. Lubaga Division. The research aimed at examining the main challenges, which widows and families encounter within and out of their community. The study was carried out because of the over increasing number of widows in the area as result of HID/AIDS. It therefore called for need to find out the leading factors for a hiked number of death rates among husbands as compared to the wives in the area. The study relied on the assumption that the increasing number of widows and orphans, due to HIV/AIDS is because of the high and un controllable population in Kisenyi area. The study would be of great value to the Division and district authorities, parents and community members as well as city authorities in the following ways; The study would enable the division and district authorities to put in place measures that would help to minimize the rate of widows and orphans in the area. The findings of this study would also serve as a warning signal to parents and community members who have to put in place appropriate planning mechanisms for their families such that they are ready to face such circumstances of single parenthood, especially for mothers. The study would be of great importance specifically to the city authorities, who would use such information to ‘fight’ the ever-growing problem of single motherhood coupled with other related problems street children. The research study was designed as a case study in that, only one area in Kampala district, Lubaga Division was chosen to represent the rest in the district.
