Revenue generation is the nucleus and path to modern development. This study assessed the impact of internally generated revenue on the development of Nigeria, a case study of Akwa ibom State. This is because the state as the second tier of government needs revenue to provide basic social amenities to the people. Thus, the study specifically sought to ascertain the extent to which Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has contributed to the provision of such infrastructure as water, electrically, sound education, health care system and roads. An ex-post factor research design was adopted and the data use were obtained from secondary sources. The data were analyzed with simple percentage statistics while chi-squared analysis were used in testing hypotheses; it was found that IGR contributed significantly and positively to the provision of social amenities to the people of the state.
The study concluded that the positive impact of IGR is not out of place but the physical evidence is apparently lacking and therefore government policies that could eradicate sharp practices in government system are required; the study also recommends that government official with corruption history should not be allowed to continue to handle responsibilities, rather people with proven integrity should be given opportunity to occupy government positions that are sensitive and could help to achieve economic development objectives
