The Impacts Of Employee Motivation On Productivity IN A Government Parastatal: The Case Study Of Federal Capital Territory - Agency For Mass Education (Fct-Ame)

ABSTRACT

Most Nigerian public corporations/parastatals have been accused of

negative attitudes to work and producing below capacity. These ugly

situations have affected their productivity. Consequently, it has resulted in

the repeated calls for their privatization and commercialization. The

Federal Capital Territory-Agency For Mass Education is one of these

parastatals bedevilled with such problems.

While the workers are exonerating themselves from the allegations of

productivity and responsibility for the declining profit, they attribute these

problems to poor and inadequate motivation.

In order to find out the causes of these problems, questionnaire is

administered to the workers of the FCT-AME. The questionnaire is

analysed with the help of percentages and statistical chi-square (X2) .

It i s discovered that negative attitudes to work and low productivity are

caused mainly by improper motivation. The management is therefore

advised to increase workers salary, initiate other motivational packages;

certificate of merit, cash award for obedience to distinguished staffs,

promotion that is not based wholly on seniority but hard work. There is

also need for fairness, justice and breach of the communication gap

between the management and employees through the encouragement of

friendly interpersonal relationship.
