The Implications of Land Resource Conflict on Communal Peace in Nandi and Narok Counties in Kenya from 1980-2019

Abstract:

The study explored the implication of land resource conflict on communal peace in Nandi and Narok counties. Land resource conflict are not new in Kenya and have drastic impact on communal peace. The study's objective was to examine the implications of land resource conflict on communal peace, socio-economic and political factors attributed to the conflict and legal challenges therein. The legal and institutional challenges for land resource conflict. The study used two theories to explore the relationship between land resource conflict and communal peace that is the Greed and Grievance theory and the Access theories. These theories explore the root causes, nature, scope and dynamism around the land resources conflict in Nandi and Narok. The study employed a cross sectional survey research design and was carried out in Nandi and Narok Counties. The study used questionnaires and Key. Informant Interviews as tools of data collection in a sample size of 100 respondent aged 13-50 years. The study established that the level of land conflict was significantly high. The study also established that political incitements, illegal land diSitti011 illegal evictions have greatly contributed to land conflict in Nandi and Narok Counties. Despite the adoption of various land policies and reforms in African countries and in Kenya in the last decade it has been noted that there is still high prevalence rate of lard related conflict. The study shows that there is a significant relationship between impact of land resource conflict and communal peace in Nandi and Narok counties. The study indicated that land resource had impact on communal peace became it affected the level of socio-economic development, political stability, ease business and trade between communities, inter-marriages and cross-cultural relationships. The study contributes to theory to theory by extending the breath of existing studies into the implication of land conflict on communal peace.
