The Partnership Between the Public and Private Security Companies on Policing in Nigeria

ABSTRACT

Without criminal acts, there will be no policing and enforcement mechanisms in our society. It is therefore important to say that crime and criminality lubricate the management of social disorders and social institutions including families, schools, governments, commercial, and private institutions. The study aims to examine the role of private and public sectors in policing and crime control in Lagos State, a case study of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, zone 2, Onikan Police Command, Lagos State and Sheriff Deputies Limited, Lagos. The main purpose of this study is to examine the definition and background, benefits of partnerships, role of private and public security companies in policing, relevance and adequacy of crime control in Lagos state. The study adopts the partnership theory. Survey method was used to gather information from respondents concerning their opinions on the partnership between the public and private security companies on policing in Nigeria. The questionnaire was self-administered to one hundred and fifty (150) respondents who responded effectively and accurately for the purpose of this analysis. The sampling was done randomly such that the respondents shall cut across the staff of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Zone 2 command and Sheriff Deputies Limited, Lagos.  To analyse the data collected from the respondents, simple frequency distribution and percentage was used while Chi-square was used to test the hypothesis. Frequency counts to assess the role of the private and Nigeria Police Force in crime control in Lagos State, against Strongly Agree, Agree, Undecided, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree (5-point Liker Scale) would be made and counted to percentages to present the overall picture of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (zone 2 command) activities and Sheriff Deputies Limited. The results revealed that public and private security sectors are two phenomena that shape each other either negatively or positively. This is so because the better the criminals become in their techniques, the greater the effort of the Police and private sectors to outsmart them in their dastard acts. The study therefore recommends partnership between the private and public security companies on policing in Nigeria.
