The Relationship between Free Condoms Use among Sexually Experienced USIU-Africa Students and Condom Use Self-Efficacy

Abstract:

Unsafe sexual behaviors increase the spread of sexually transmitted infections among college students. Self-efficacy involves showing trust in one's capability to implement a specific behavior. The objective of this study was to assess condom use self-efficacy among USIU-Africa heterosexual sexually experienced students. The study is a quantitative research that sought to discover how participants felt about Condom use, how they act or think about them. The study, an analytical cross-sectional survey, examined the variables affecting the continuity of free condom use among university students at United States International University-Africa (USIUAfrica). The study utilized the Condom Use Self-Efficacy Scale (CUSES) tool to collect data about the respondent’s ability to source condoms, use them, and negotiate about their use with a prospective partner. The online survey was conducted in the five main academic schools of USIU-Africa. The study employed a correlational strategy to examine and describe relationships between two variables using the Pearson correlation test for each. Results showed that there was no significant statistical relationship between gender and condom use self-efficacy (p= 0.734, r=0.026). Also, there was no significant statistical relationship between males who use alcohol or drugs and condom use self-efficacy (p= 0.384, r=0.082). This study also revealed that there is a statistically significant relationship between degree level and condom use self-efficacy (p= 0.000, r=0.282). This led to the conclusion that degree level showed to be a good determinant of condom use self-efficacy.
