ABSTRACT
The study has explored “The Role of School Management in Controlling Teachers‟ Performance in Government Secondary Schools, the Case of Dodoma Municipality”. It, thus, focuses on assessing the effectiveness of school management on controlling teacher‟s performance at work. A sample of 80 respondents was used and these were haphazardly obtained from Dodoma Municipality. Data collection employed interviews, questionnaire and documentary review. The tables, figures, percentages and frequency were used for data analysis. In this study the theories pertaining to School management and teachers performance was established to familiarize the reader. The study reveals that School Management are still faced with a number of challenges including noncommitment of teachers, lack of enough fund to run schools and the lack of enough knowledge on administration. Also school managements are not well organized and there is no delegation of power, monitoring and supervision to the teachers are not well known. Moreover, the study reveals that there is some Political interference in education system practiced by some government officers, hence the less effectiveness of the head teachers. Accordingly, Politics limit the autonomy of the head teachers at the end the teachers working performance is increasingly declining. The study recommends that in order to have strong and capable school management, the Government must fully take severe measures against all those who misuse their power and school resources. Secondly, it is recommended that the recruitment process must be done by the heads of schools to allow them to select the required sample and ensure well disciplined and accountable personnel. For effective performance of school management and teachers the study recommends that academic spheres must not be intervened by politics. School leaders should be responsible with teacher‟s motivation. Lastly it suggests some areas of further researches for school management and education development in Tanzania.
