The Role Of The United Nations Development Program In Promoting Good Governance: A Case Study Of Zanzibar

ABSTRACT

This study assessed the role of the United Nations Development Program in promoting good governance in Zanzibar. It examined the status of good governance in Zanzibar, found out the link between the United Nations Development Program on good governance programs to government and nongovernmental organisations, and evaluated the UNDP strategies used in achieving the goals of promoting good governance within Zanzibar. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze information by frequencies and percentages. The researcher also, applied Microsoft Excel packages in construction of charts in data presentation. Moreover the qualitative data including open ended questionnaire and interviews from the key informants were analysed through content analysis, summarizing the key findings regarding variables. Presentations of qualitative data followed the research objectives based on themes. Also the study involved the government officials, UNDP sub-office officials in Zanzibar, nongovernmental organisations and ordinary people especially in Urban District. The findings of this study revealed that the lack of knowledge, none cooperative strategies and poor cooperation among stakeholders of good governance including, government, United Nations Development Program, nongovernmental organisations and ordinary people are the major challenges which lead to poor implementation of good governance principles in Zanzibar. The study findings concluded that, good governance in Zanzibar will be improved through active participation of all stakeholders in strategies and policy formulation and also, the implementation of good governance principles. The findings of the study are most significant because they will offer a framework of understanding good governance within Zanzibar .
