Urban Development As A Challenge In The Management Of Wetlands. A Case Study Of Busambaga Wetland In Katabi, Wakiso District

Increased residential and commercial development threatens wetland functions, particularly near urban centers. This research explored the values and attitudes of residents concerning wetlands, wetland restoration, and development near Busambaga wetland in Katabi, Wakiso District. Key Informant interviews were conducted to contextualize issues on wetlands management challenges, impacts of rapid urban development on the functionality of wetland ecosystem in relation to the human activities being carried, and community involvement in its conservation and protection. Interview results were used to generate random samples and use of multi-county self-administered semi-structured questionnaires.

Results show that residents find protecting Busambaga wetland resources such as groundwater, green space, craft materials, soils, medicinal materials and access to clean drinking water very important. Environmental concerns or challenges were high regarding flooding, wetland encroachments due to urban development, and deteriorating water quality. Wakiso District and NEMA officials underestimate resident’s awareness of functions and values of Busambaga wetland.
