Using Instructional Materials: Effects on Students Performance in Biology Subject

ABSTRACT 

This study focuses on the effect of the use of instructional materials on students’ performance in Biology – A case study of Surulere Local Government Area, Lagos state. Inadequate and ineffective use of instructional materials by teachers has been identified as one of the reasons for poor performance of students in Biology in secondary schools. The study aimed at investigating the effect of the use of instructional materials on the teaching of the subject Biology. It also examines the effect of instructional materials on the learning of Biology and evaluates the effect of the use of instructional materials on students’ academic performance in Biology. The study population comprised all Senior Secondary Schools teachers in Surulere Local Government Area, Lagos state of Nigeria. Ten Government Senior Secondary Schools in Surulere Local Government Area, Lagos state were randomly selected to serve as sample for the study. Ten teachers were selected from each school. In all, one hundred teachers formed the sample for the study. Three research hypotheses were proposed and tested using Chi-square. The following conclusions were reached based on the result of findings from the study: Instructional materials have significant effect on the teaching of Biology. Also, the uses of instructional materials have significant effect on the learning of Biology. Finally, instructional materials have significant effect on students’ academic performance. Recommendations were offered for policy implementation.
