ABSTRA CT The title ofthe study/s ~work place stress and health workers “performance in Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital’. Some of the objectives were that the study examined the extent to which work p/ace stress relates with performance of health workers~ to recommend strategies that will enhance performance of heafth workers iii mental institutions and to identify the level ofstress and that ofperformance in Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital. To establish performance ofrespondents in terms ofage1 gendei, educational qualification. A descn~tive cross sectional survey design guided the study and primary data was collected using structured questionnaires. Respondents dassified into strata from which they were chosen randomly. The study population was 225 and a sample sLze of 14”l was got using sloven ~ formula for generating sample sL~’e. The study revealed the following findings; majority of respondents were female, diploma holders and served between 16-~2O years. Level of stress ranged from moderate to lov~. majority of health workers’performance was low and there was a positive si~qnificant relationshi7 between stress and performance and the null hypothesis was rejected. Health workers were not fully stressed but their performance was ranged from moderate to low. The recommendations were that Uganda government offidals pay more attention to the welfare of the employees ofthe National Referral Mental HospitaL The study will be, useful to the doctors, nurses, corporate society and the political dass in Kampala.
