INTRODUCTION The World Environment Day is a day set aside by the United Nations (UN) set aside to encourage worldwide awareness and develop actions/solutions to some of the important global environmental issues we face. It is celebrated in over a 100 countries and has been a pivotal platform for public environmental outreach since 1974. The theme of this year’s event is “BEAT PLASTICS POLLUTION”. Plastics pollution is one of the biggest environmental issues we face globally and it constitutes a global challenge that requires immediate attention. Global production of plastics has risen from 1.5million tonnes per year in 1950 to 322million tonnes per year as at 2015 (source: UNEPA/European Commission). A large percentage of plastic produced each year is used to make single-use, disposable packaging items or products which will get permanently thrown out within one year.
