BSTRACT

An epic is a genre of literature which has contributed in the writing of the Swahili novel. This research seeks to establish how an epic has in influenced the writing of a novel. This research was guided by the following objectives: First, to show that the themes found in an epic are the same ones found in the novel. Secondly, to show how an epic can be used as a style in the writing of a novel. Thirdly, to explain the comparison between the characters of an epic and those ones found in the novel. This research was done in the library. Mikhail Bakhtin‟s theory of dialogism was used. The research was based on the principle which asserts that all the genres of literature „dialogue. The research sample was purposefuly selected where three novels were chosen. The novels include: Kasri ya Mwinyi Fuad, Msimu wa Vipepeo and Walenisi. Data was collected through indepth reading of the selected novels. The data was then analysed basing on the research questions and objectives. The analysis was also based on the tenetes of of the theory. The research findings were given out through explanations and quoting of relevant examples from the selected novels. It was found that an epic as a genre of literature can be used as a style in the writing of a novel.
