ABSTRACT

Churches are compendia of symbols. The celebrations which take place in them enact

these symbols. Their interpretation cannot be improvised but is a product of the

interpretation given by the Church throughout its history and in its teaching and liturgy.

1be Church turns to the more widely used symbols of religious language to express its

faith and dispose each person to receive its vision of the churches. The Symbols of the

Church offers a beautiful and thoughtful introduction to their symbolic meaning.

Symbols are pictorial representations of beliefs. Within belief and Christian traditions,

symbols can point beyond the world in which we live to the relationship of the believer

to the spiritual. ·Through images, symbolism is the most powerful way to express

complex ideas and concepts.

Certain choice of forms depends on the liturgical requirements and symbolical

architectural character. Recent developments are inclined towards the merging of the

basilican and centripetal plan-forms. This has resulted from the desire to make

contemporary churches communal and intimate in character, thereby encouraging

oneness and unity ofthe congregation.

This study explores and evolves methods and techniques which ensure modem symbolic

expression of the church building in the Anglican community. Sacred spaces are shaped

by the form ofworship to express and conform to the tradition and liturgy carried within.

For vivid illustrations, various principles, theories , strategies, and application and

techniques were evaluated and reviewed. Also, various design considerations on

Cathedral architecture were made so as to ensure proper integration of the church

b ilding W with its symbolic meaning.
