Challenges Facing Provision Of Career Counseling Services In Public Secondary Schools In Dodoma Municipality

ABSTRACT

This study intended to investigate the challenges facing provision of career counseling services in Public secondary schools in Dodoma Municipality, Tanzania. Furthermore, the study suggested measures for providing career counseling services in secondary schools. The study adopted Social Learning Theory of Career Decision Making in the theoretical framework. Besides, the study employed descriptive cross-sectional survey research design. Then a purposive sampling technique was employed to select 8 school counselors while simple random sampling was used to obtain 80 students from secondary schools. Data were collected using an open ended questionnaires and semi structure interview methods. Findings of this study revealed that career counseling services were minimally provided in secondary schools. The study also established that there were inadequate cooperation among secondary counselors and students. Furthermore, teachers and students lacked awareness on the use of career counseling services in improving their academic and future life. Lastly, it was revealed that career counseling provision was affected by lack of professional trained counselors, and absence of counseling instructional materials. The study recommended that the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MoEST) would strengthen the career counseling units in secondary schools for efficient implementation of the career counseling programmes in schools. Importantly that there would be a guiding policy at national level to inform career guidance and counseling practices at all levels of education in the country. It further recommended areas for further research.
