ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effectiveness of Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy and Cognitive Therapy on managing abused widows' psychosocial problems such as depression and anxiety. A total of 200 widows with age not more than fifty and must have been widowed for not more than 5 years were drawn from South-East geo-political zone of Nigeria and used for the final sample. They were made up of 40 widows from each of the states i.e. Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo States respectively. The study utilized an experimental design using pre-test-post-test control group design. Three research instruments were used to generate relevant data for the study. Seven hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Data collected were treated statistically using the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), chi-square (chi?) and Fisher's protected t- test. All the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 levels of significance. Results of the data indicated that out of the seven null hypotheses tested six were rejected but one hypothesis was accepted.
