ABSTRACT
The study aimed at finding out the determinants of food security in Magoro Sub County.
Katakwi district. It was guided by three objective; (I) examining the food security situation. (II) finding out the determinants of food security, and (III) examining the significance of the
determinants of food security on food security in the study area. The study was quantitative
guided by cross sectional as well as correlational designs. The target population was 100
households of whom oniy 88 were sampled. A two stage stratified simple random sampling
procedure was used to select households where parishes were first stage units and households were second stage units. Self-administered questionnaires were used as tools of data collection. The data was analyzed using SPSS-V (16) using frequencies and percentage distributions while the binary logistic regression was used to examine the determinants of food security. The findings indicated that the food security situation of households that participated in the study is
low. Access to credit had a greater influence on food availability. More so, findings revealed
that most households who participated in the study obtain their food from the markets and little from their own production and consequently could reduce the size of their meals due to
inadequate food. The study revealed that the major determinants of food security include:
gender, contribution of food from other families and access to land by family households. A
higher likelihood of food security existed among households headed by females compared to males in terms of gender while the contribution of food from other household members held a great significance in securing food. Land accessibility increased the chances of having more food in the family as they were able to produce more on their own. It is therefore recommended that much effort he directed towards sensitizing men to engage in activities that aim at improving the food security situation in Magoro Sub County. Policies that will make micro-credit from government and nongovernmental agencies accessible to rural farmers will go a long way in addressing their resource acquisition constraints to land. credit among others and eventually improving household food security in the Sub County.
