Different Faiths-Teaching And National Unity In Wakisi Sub-County Primary Schools.

Abstract

the study aims at identifying a religious education curriculum design for

tansforming the teaching of religious education from the inculcation of religious

octrines of a denominational nature (Religious instructions) to learning about and

understanding other religions (Religious studies).

the current religious education (RE) syllabus is faith-based, in two divisions of

slam Religious Education (I.RE) and Christian Religious Education(CRE). It is

religious instruction that is inculcation of religious doctrines of a denominational

Lature. The Primary School Curriculum Review(PSCR) team observed that the two

faith approach encourages disunity whereas the constitution and aims of primary

education are committed to National unity and tolerance of other religions.

the Primary School Curriculum Review(PSCR) team (June 2004) recommended

-Or a common approach to the R.E syllabus and integration of some aspects of the

IB content into other subject areas.

[he faith leaders of UJCC and UMSC rejected the common approach and the

ntegration of the content as disguised intention to make RE teaching uniform and

!xcluding the IRE and CRE influence on the young.

fhe study assesses the grounds on which the recommendations and objections were

nade in order to suggest a common design for a multi-faith society that promotes

llnity and tolerates other religions.

The findings of the study revealed that although the recommendations were made in

good faith, they were vague and open to varied interpretations.

In particular the integration vvas confused with provisions of education facilities

which rightly imply disregard of differences.
