Abstract: The study examined the factors responsible for poor academic performance of English language in senior secondary schools in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State. Two specific purposes and two research questions guided the study. A survey design was adopted for the study. The targeted population for the study was eleven thousand six hundred and seventy-five (11675) with a sample size of one hundred (100). The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to the five schools selected for the study. The data were analyzed
using percentage. Research finding in the study revealed that there is interference of mother tongue on the study of English language and that class size greatly affects the teaching and learning of English language in senior secondary schools in Enugu South LGA. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that teachers should be made to make use of correct teaching method in the teaching of English and that mother tongue should be restricted as stipulated by the National Policy on Education 4th Edition. Students should be taught in English and made to speak the language always. Finally, qualified teachers should be employed.
