ABSTRACT The paper presents the results of investigation on the effect of soaking time on the yield strength, ductility and hardness properties of annealed cold-drawn low carbon steel. The low carbon steel cold-drawn at 40% deformation was annealed at 900 deg Celsius for soaking times of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 minutes. Tensile, charpy and Brinnel hardness tests were conducted to determine the yield strengths, tensile strengths, impact strengths, ductility and hardness of the annealed stee...
ABSTRACT This research work investigated the corrosion resistance of nickel plated medium carbon steel in cocoa liquor. It simulated the effect of continuous use of the material in a cocoa liquor environment where corrosion products are left in place. Medium carbon steel samples were nickel electroplated at 4V for 20, 25, 30, and 35 mins. using Watts solution. The plated samples were then subjected to a cocoa liquor environment for 30 days. The electrode potentials mV (SCE) were measured eve...
Abstract This research work investigated the modeling of Von Mises stress in LNG Spherical Carbon Steel Storage tank using assumed displacement Finite Element analysis based on shallow shell triangular elements. Using equations of elasticity, constant thickness carbon steel spherical storage tanks were subjected to different loading conditions. This paper stresses the need for proper definition of shallow element using sector angles to obtain the shallowness. The shallow spherical triangular...
ABSTRACT A bone-crusher ( Haminrrer Mill ) was designed, constructed and tested. The machine was designed to crush 1000kg of bones in one hour. The motor operating speed employed is 2920rpm, the sieve hole diameters are 7mm and 5mm while the numbers of hammers are 12 and 18 'pieces. The performance tests show that the mill is capable of crushing between 860 to I l70kg within an hour.
ABSTRACT This investigation derived its strong motivation in the adoption of versions of second-order Runge-Kutta methods whery there is presently dearth of relevant literature to re-establish the complicated nature of solution of buffing oscillator dynamics, The choice of second-order Runge-Kutta methods hinged on its simplest algebraic formulation of relevant coefficients based on Taylor series expansion comparing With its higher order counterpart. Validation of FORTRAN-90 codes of algorith...
ABSTRACT Combustion characteristics of coconut shell (CS) samples in an experimental model bubbling fluidized bed combustor (BFE3C) was investigated with special focus on effect of particle size of the CS. CS waste obtained from farm were crushed and classified into three sizes; Size X (12-50mm). SizeY (2-12mm) and Size Z (c2mm). For overbed feeding of the feedstock, the impact of the particle size on emission and combustion performance were examined. in a 150m diameter experimental model BFB...
ABSTRACT Two field experiments were conducted to compare the growth and yield of tomatoes using experimentation and FAO AquaCrop model at the University of Cape Coast Teaching and Research Farm in the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly of the Central Region of Ghana. The Randomized Complete Block Design was used with four (4) treatments and four(4) replications for the two experiments. The treatments used for both experiments were T1 – Full irrigation (100 %), T2 – 90 % irrigation, T3 – 8...
ABSTRACT This study examines the manufacturing capabilities of the Nigerian furniture industry. An extensive review of literature was carried on wood; structure, seasoning types, properties and finishing, Also" a review on wood furniture manufacturing processes, In terms of tools. equipments, design, ergonomics, finishing was carried out. Interview, observation, discussion and survey method " were used for data gathering .from some selected furniture workshops in Lagos: An assessment of the f...
ABSTRACT Multi-layered, feed forward . , back-propagation artificial neural networks (ANN) models were developed to predict friction losses in spark-ignition engines. The friction losses were modeled as friction mean effective pressure (fmep) due to: crankshaft, reciprocating parts, valve trains, auxiliary, and pumping systems. The developed models were validated in relation to existing engine friction data and empirical models of Patton et ai. (patton, K.J., Nitsche, R.G. and Heywood lB. [1...
ABSTRACT Contamination of cement slurries during oil well cementing distorts their designed properties and leads ultimately to poor cement jobs. To promote best practices and enhance cementing successes, it is always desirable to understand slurry response under different conditions such as contamination. Appropriate corrective measures can then be undertaken where necessary. This study carried out complete rheological experimental characterization of oil well cement slurries contaminated by ...
ABSTRACT Environmental exposure to lead, a highly toxic heavy metal, is a significant cause of human morbidity and mortality. However, the determination of lead levels in homes and built environment have not been well investigated in Nigeria. This study was designed to evaluate the lead levels in dust, paint, paint chips, soil and water; and to ascertain the geotechnical properties of soil in the home environment in Ibadan. Four Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) were conducted and six hundred ...
ABSTRACT The main purpose of the study was to investigate into the impact of using CFL bulbs on energy consumption in Ghana- a case study of Twifo Hemang lower Denkyira district in the central region of Ghana. This study employed quantitative and descriptive methodology to collect data and analyze data. The population for this study comprises individuals who consume electricity in the Twifo Hemang lower Denkyira District in the Central Region of Ghana. The population for the study was...
ABSTRACT Sand produced along with oil and gas causes operational, safety, environmental and severe economic challenges. The cost of installing sand control facilities which may not really be needed could also be substantial. Therefore, determining the critical flow rate for the onset of sand production is very important. There are several published studies on sanding in vertical wells, but few on horizontal wells, which have now become very prominent in the industry. The aim of this study was...
ABSTRACT This study focuses on footwear used by Nigerian industrial workers The suitability and comfortablity of these shoes used in a typical Nigerian factory were assessed based on their response to some well-structured questionnaires Some Important features of the shoes were compared with internationally recommended standards The result shows that 62% of the respondents' shoes are suitable These are mostly shoes that are light weight low heeled. made of leather material. and steel toed, th...
ABSTRACT A Survey of the pattern of usage of building materials in the small - to - medium farms in Western Nigeria was undertaken. Wood was the commonest construction material in use, followed by earth products and natural fibres. Decay, and weathering of natural fibres including timber; arid the erosion of earth products were the major problems experienced with their uses. Treatment of the natural products before use was found wanting. Adequate seasoning and preservative treatment of natural...
