Assessment of The Levels Of Heavy Metals In Sediments, Water And Fish From The Weija Dam

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to assess the levels of heavy metal contaminations within the Weija dam area of the Weija Lake. Sediments, water and fish samples were taken from ten different sites within the Weija dam in March, 2014 (dry season) and August, 2014 (wet season). The sediment, water and fish samples were analysed for Hg, Se, Fe, Cd, Mn and Pb using Atomic Absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Mercury was determined using a cold vapour technique with the AAS equipped with hydride ge...

The Effect Of Computer-Based Instruction On Learning Law Of Contract In Asutifi District Senior High Schools

ABSTRACT Computer-Based Instruction (CBI) is now considered the technological phenomenon to revolutionize education and training. Today, the Internet and computer technology are reported to have significantly altered the education landscape by way of enhancing students’ learning and academic performance. The study examined the effect of Computer-Based Instruction on learning Law of Contract, in the Asutifi District Senior High Schools. The study involved 80 students, 40 students each from t...

Effects of Metakaolin as Supplementary Cementitious Material in Mortars For Construction Applications

ABSTRACT This work presents the effects of metakaolin as a supplementary cementitious material in mortars for construction applications. Kaolin from Teleku Bokazo was calcined at 650oC and partially used to replace Portland limestone cement to produce mortars and paste. The metakaolin was successfully used in a cement paste and its effect observed in the different cement replacements proportions. The replacements ranged from 10% - 35% by mass and characterised after 3, 7, 14 and 28 days of c...

The Carotenoid Biosynthesis Pathway In The Asexual Intraerythrocytic Stages Of Plasmodium Falciparum: In Vitro Inhibiton Assays, HPLC Profiling Of Carotenoids And Bioinformatics Analysis

ABSTRACT Plasmodium falciparum, like other Apicomplexans, has retained a relict plastid known as the apicoplast. This organelle represents a new and exciting target for the chemotherapeutic management of malaria because it houses metabolic pathways that are unique to the parasite such as isoprenoid biosynthesis. The phytoene synthase (PSY) gene, has been demonstrated to be very important in carotenogenesis, however, little is known about the evolutionary relatedness of this gene in P. falci...

Assessment Of Coastal Ecosystems In The Greater Cape Three Points Area Towards Its Designation As Marine Protected Area In Ghana

ABSTRACT Coastal ecosystems sustain local and national fisheries livelihoods through a range of ecosystem services (ES) they provide. Five of these coastal ecosystems, located in two communities within the Greater Cape Three Points (GCTP) area—Princess Town (PT) and Cape Three Points (C3P)—were assessed to develop a scheme for establishing Marine Protected Area (MPA). To conduct an integrated assessment, the study employed the Community Participatory Mapping and Assessment of ecosystems a...

Implementation of Invivo Dosimetry For External Photo Beam Radiotherapy Using Gaftromic Ebt 2 Film

ABSTRACT In vivo dosimetry can be considered as a quality assurance tool that supplements port films, computational double checks and phantom studies. It is a process of monitoring the dose (skin, entrance, exit, mid plane and target) delivered to a patient during treatment and plays a role in relating the degree to which the delivered dose matches the prescribed dose. Dosimeters currently used for in vivo dosimetry are diodes, thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLDs), electronic portal imaging ...

Storage And Packaging Studies On Degermed Maize Flour

ABSTRACT Preservation and storage of whole maize flour poses a lot of problems owing to its fat content among other factors. This study therefore sought to develop processing and preservation procedures for maize flour and also to determine the effect of storage time on some quality indices o f the product. Degermed maize flour was prepared using a maize sheller and grits obtained milled into flour using a disc attrition mill and non-degermed maize flour prepared by direct milling of the mai...

Comparative Study Of The Logistic Regression Analysis And The Discriminant Analysis

ABSTRACT This thesis considers logistic regression and discriminant analysis. Because the ordinary least regression requires that a dependent variable in a study cannot be categorical, the logistic regression and the discriminant analysis techniques are two major techniques that are often used to handle categorical dependent variable problems. This study, therefore, seeks to getting answer to the question of whether using the logistic regression and the discriminant analysis techniques, on th...

Exploration Of The Ecotypes Of Achatina Achatina (L) For Snail Farming In Ghana

ABSTRACT Intraspecific variation in Achatina achatina achatina Linne (one of the numerous giant African snails) in Ghana was studied using chronological features, body characters and reproductive potential. Snails were collected from June to August, 2006, from four ecological regions namely Ashanti (Amansie East district), Central (Assin South district), Eastern (Suhum- Kraboa- Coaltar district) and Western (Wassa West district). In this study, the four snail populations showed a broad range ...

Impact Of Computer Based Instruction (Cbi) On Students’ Performance In Mathematics: A Case Study Of Public Basic Schools In Kasoa

ABSTRACT The main purpose of this study was to ascertain the differences existing between the use of Computer Based Instruction (CB1) and the traditional method of teaching mathematics. The study was conducted in two basic schools in Kasoa. The schools were St. Martha’s Basic school and Emmanuel Presby basic school all in Kasoa. The survey was conducted by using questionnaire and achievement test items. Items in the Questionnaire and the text items were of relevance to the purpose of the su...

Molecular Characterization Of Hepatitis B Virus In Rural And Semi-Urban Areas In The Central Region Of Ghana

ABSTRACT Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major cause of liver inflammation accounting for 887,000 deaths annually. The introduction of HBV vaccines has significantly reduced new cases of the infection, but there are still 65 million people living with the virus in Sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, 10 genotypes (A-J) of HBV have been classified. Several studies have shown that the different HBV genotypes differently influence clinical presentation, progression of liver diseases and respons...

Cryptococcal Meningitis In Hospitalized Hiv Patients At The Fevers’ Unit, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra

ABSTRACT Introduction: Cryptococcal meningitis (CM) is the leading form of meningitis in HIV/AIDS patients and causes significant morbidity and mortality, even in the advent of accessibility of antiretroviral therapy. Globally, the burden of CM is estimated to be at 9.6 million cases and results in about 6.2 million deaths within three months of infection. General aim: The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of Cryptococcal meningitis in hospitalized HIV-infected patients at the ...

Hydrochemtcal and Isotopic Characterization of Groundwater in the Buem, Voltaian and Togo Formations of the Volta Region, Ghana.

ABSTRACT Variation in groundwater chemistry and isotopic composition has been observed in the northern part o f the Volta Region. The geology o f the study area consists o f quartz schist, quartzitic sandstone, shales, mudstones and siitstone. The extent to which the water chemistry and isotopic composition has been affected by geology is however not known. This study therefore seeks to determine the general chemical character of the groundwater in relation to the different lithologies and de...
