Investigating The Usage Of Web 2.0 Technologies For Learning Practices In Higher Learning Institutions: A Case Study Of The University Of Dodoma

ABSTRACT

This research investigated the usage of web 2.0 technologies (W2T) for learning practices in higher learning institutions. These technologies include wikis, blogs, YouTube, Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, Google Doc and MySpace. However, learning practices include activities such as assignment, assessment, discussion, lectures, searching learning materials (library), communication and collaboration. Data were collected by two approaches which are semi-structures interview and questionnaire. In this study the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) has been modified by introducing six variables which are sharing from community of practices, external variables (training, information literacy, subject norms, perceived enjoyment, management support) and the original variables of the TAM model which introduced by Davis in 1986. In light of this, the current study extended these necessary variables in order to link with investigation of the usage of web 2.0 technologies for learning practices in higher learning institutions.

In this study, the four research specific objectives with research questions were achieved. Some specific objectives were achieved with the hypotheses. The development of the ten hypotheses was based on the variables of the research model of the study. A questionnaire consisted of questions which covering the variables of research model and others. It was designed in order to collect the required data for examining hypotheses and reaching conclusions. Also, data were analyzed by using thematic, descriptive, and Structural Equation Modeling analysis.

It was found that all the variables (factors) of this study affect the use of W2T directly and indirectly. Also, through interview it was found that students mostly use YouTube, WhatsApp, Facebook, wikis, GitHub and Google++ for sharing, communicating, collaboration, interaction, searching and generating learning materials. These technologies have features that allow the students to do their learning activities and also easy to access.

The Motive behind this study was the interest on the integration and use of available technologies such as web 2.0 technologies to support effective learning in Tanzania Higher Learning Institutions (HLIs). With effective use of these technologies for learning practices is fruitful for the students and institutions. Students will be able to access learning everywhere and anytime. Therefore, a study was conducted to propose the framework and ways of using W2T effectively in Higher Learning Institutions.
