CHAPTER ONE 1.0 Introduction This chapter basically focused on the background of the study, problem statement, purpose of the study, general objectives, specific objectives, research questions, scope of the study, and the significance of the study respectively. 1.1 Background The word "Leader" may be traced back about 700 years, and the concept may be found in the earliest writing of the Greeks and the predecessors. However, leadership did not exist in English language until less than 200 years ago. Leadership has been defined in numerous ways, but it's usually seen as the influence exerted by one individual or group of persons to accomplish some goals. In organizations, leadership is usually associated with the influence that a manager exerts in the accomplishment of goals associated with the productivity of the organization thus effective leadership among managers may be viewed as the means of motivating employees to improve their performance since a major concern of human resource managers is to improve employee performance, therefore it's not surprising that the study of leadership styles has been of such interest to many researchers.
